SECTION 2,
Sir Edward Grey to the Marquis de Soveral.
Sir,
Foreign Office, May 12, 1909. WITH reference to the recent verbal communications regarding Macao made by you to this department, I have the honour to inform you that I have received from His Majesty's Minister at l'eking a reply to the telegrams which were dispatched to him on the 1st and 4th instant.
Sir J. Jordan states that, having received the necessary evidence, he will take an early opportunity of drawing the serious attention of the Wai-wu Pu to the agitation which is proceeding at Canton. Meanwhile the Portuguese Chargé d'Affaires has received a note from the Wai-wu Pu stating that the rumours of a raid upon Macao are pure inventions on the part of the Macao Portuguese.
Sir J. Jordan adds that the Portuguese legation in Peking do not appear to have received the Lisbon arrangement of the 8th February last, and that they are under instructions to avoid discussing it at all. He therefore finds it difficult to say how far the Chinese Government are giving effect to it.
I have, &c.
W. LANGLEY,
